The old military and forest roads offer fascinating day and half-day mountain bike tours which are suited to both experienced mountain bikers as well as beginners. A mountain bike map showing ten different tours is available in the tourist information office and bookshops.

Mountain Bike Tours

Stilfes Eggertal (12.5 km – 1 hour 15 min – 550 vertical metres)
From the church in Stilfes head in the direction of Niederried/Pfulters. Turn right at the crossroads and continue past the Maurerhof guest house which is also a good place to take a rest and have a snack. Head over the concrete bridge before turning right and climbing up in the direction of Egg (signposted). Head right over the second bridge and along the asphalted road located just after the courtyard with the chapel on the right. Head down the “Penserjochstrasse” road (guest house “Schönblick” located 50m further up the road) and take the right fork when the road divides. Continue along the path for 200m and opposite the small holy shrine take the old path to Stilfes (signposted). Continue along the path ignoring the various forest roads. Head past the sports area and then along the asphalt road back into the village and to the church.

 

Pfitscherjoch (26 km – 2 hours 30 min – 830 vertical metres)
From the Knappenwirt guesthouse in St. Jakob in Pfitsch head into the valley along an asphalted road before continuing along a gravel track as far as Weiler Stein. Follow the brown sign marked “Pfitscherjoch“. Continue along the path before taking a sharp right at the crossroads and heading steeply up to the “Pfitscherjochhaus” refuge. From the refuge the route back heads along the same way you came all the way back to St Jakob in Pfitsch.

Grubbergalm (1.2 km – 1 hour 20 min – 570 vertical metres)
From the Hotel Kranebitt in Kematen/Grube head along the old “Pfitscherstrasse” road into the valley before taking the first asphalt road on the left. Head up the road and follow the sign for the “Grubberghütte” mountain hut. Approximately 100m past the gate across the forest road turn right and follow the signpost left. Fork off to the right. After a short ascent, you reach the “Grubberghütte” mountain hut. Head back the way you came to the fork in the road and then continue straight on, always keeping to the right (do not follow the way you came up). Head straight on downhill, past the signposts, past the gate across the forest road and back to the Hotel Kranebitt.

Roßkopf (25.9 km – 2 hours 15 min – 980 vertical metres)
Follow the signpost marked “Raminges 19 / Roßkopf 23” located in the car park next to the bottom station of the “Roßkopfseilbahn” cable car. Head along the asphalted road in the direction of Thuins before turning right uphill at the crossroads in the direction of Telfes. Head straight on at the second bend in the road, past the “Haus Rainer” guesthouse along the gravel road in the direction of the Roßkopf. Keep heading straight on until the road divides and take the bend in the road heading left in the direction of the “Sterzinger Haus” mountain hut. Follow the sign for “Kastellacke”. Having reached the Kastellacke Lake follow the path Nr. 19a in the direction of Vallmingalm. Take the right hand fork in the road heading uphill and follow the forest track (no longer the Mk 19a) straight on until you reach a gate. From the gate head downhill to the asphalt road and then straight on right heading in the direction of Sterzing. When the road divides take the right-hand fork towards Thuins and continue straight along the road. After the bridge head left downhill for 50m. When you come to the roadside shrine lift your bike over the steps and the wall before heading back to the bottom lift station of the cable car.    

Hühnerspiel (26.7 km – 3 hours 30 min – 1100 vertical metres)
The departure point for the tour is Sterzing railway station car park. From here head in the direction of Wiesen. When the road divides take the left-hand fork in the direction of Flains/Schmuders. Continue along the road for several kilometres, past the “Braunhof” guest house which also offers a good opportunity to take a rest and have a snack. Shortly after the guest house take the right-hand fork in the road and continue along the gravel track in the direction of the “Brandner Alm” mountain hut where you can also stop for a breather and a snack. Twelve kilometres into the tour the gravel track comes to an end. Continue along the forest path in the direction of the “Hühnerspiel Alm” hut. When you reach the Platzalm head left through the meadow until you reach the old ski lifts. Follow the forest trail with the red/white markings under the lift pylons uphill until the path merges with a larger forest trail which you then follow round to the right until you reach Gossensass. For here you can either take the larger “Brennerstraße” road back to Sterzing or the quieter road via Steckholz
